For a bit of a background, Ludum Dare is an accelerated solo game development competition. Entrants develop games from scratch in 48 hours, based on a theme voted by the community. It was established back in the year of 2002 by Geoff Howland, and has since then run more than 15 competitions, creating well over 1000 games in 48 hours and less.

This year's first Ludum Dare competition, Ludum Dare 17, has attracted 208 entries based on the theme of "Islands", which has generated some pretty innovative experimental pieces. We'll be looking at some notable ones in the next few weeks, but for those who can't wait, hop over right now and try out the incredible creations generated over the weekend.
