A Fishing Adventure Review

Rating:

Sophie Houlden has my upmost respect for the creation of The Linear RPG, which I reviewed yesterday here at IndieReview. She has my admiration even more so now with her Ludum Dare 17 entry, which is easily one of the better looking ones we have reviewed so far.

Full Review

The Fishing Adventure is a game created by Sophie Houlden on the Unity platform for the 17th installation of 48 hour game creation competition, Ludum Dare. The Fishing Adventure is played by spearing fish with a grappling hook and reeling them back to your character to be used as tools for the solving of puzzles. The fishes have various abilites such as being used as a hanglider, hoverboard, weight and more, that provide the player with additional movement options required for progress within this game.

The gameplay focuses heavily on puzzle-solving augmented by some platforming challenges. It is difficult to understand the way the game works without prior explaination or experience, and you might take a while to get used to it. For example, it isn't immediately apparent what the Heavy Fish is used for because nothing happens when you try to use it - it turns out that I need to just hold on to it while standing on pressure switches to be heavy enough to activate them.

There is no sound in this game, which is understandable considering the time pressure of the competition and the ultimate goal of coming out with a fun prototype that is just "good enough".

For a short game to occupy your for about 15-30 minutes, this game is an excellent choice. You can play it via the Unity Web Player, or download it as an executable over at the Ludum Dare website.
