Castle Crashers Review

Rating:

Castle Crashers is a simple beat \'em up game developed by Newgrounds developer Behemoth. What it wins with is its wacky internet-bred flash art style and toilet humor approach to gags found in-game. You\'ll laugh your way to the final boss with this one.

Castle Crashers is developed by developer Behemoth, who previously brought to the Xbox Live Arcade audience the game Alien Hominid, which debuted originally as a flash game on Newgrounds. Released similarly on the Xbox Live Arcade platform, Castle Crashers is a beat \'em up game similar to older console hits such as Double Dragon and Golden Axe. What it adds to the formula though, is a brand of humor unique to Behemoth and a lack of seriousness that is incredibly entertaining.

Gameplay wise, the minions thrown at you are fun to beat up and there are a myriad of fun bosses for players to fight. What really shines though, are the numerous enemy characters you can unlock during playthroughs. These enemies ensure endless replay value for the game because each of them have a unqiue spell that they can cast, and each playthrough with an enemy unlocks another, forming a seemingly endless chain of unlockables.

There are also numerous weapons to pick up, buy and collect. These weapons are never lost, and are stored in a stash-like level players can return to if they decide to switch to a weapon obtained earlier. For packrats, this feature will be able to keep your hoarding instinct occupied for hours on end.

Graphics for the game are done by Dan Paladin, whose unique flash-like artstyle and humor really increases the entertainment value of the game. Characters are cute and super deformed with exaggerated expressions when hit or performing attacks. Backgrounds in the game are all incredibly well done, detailed and animated for additional effect.

All in all, a great game for it price on the Xbox Live Arcade platform.
