Full Review
Color Cube is a puzzle game developed by Quentin Bolsee on the open-source 3D modeling tool, Blender. The player rolls a metal cube around using the keyboard's directional buttons and carry colored light on any of the cube's six sides when that side touches a colored surface. The player then uses these colored sides to activate similarly colored switches that remove obstacles blocking the way to the goal. However, when a colored side hits the ground or a wall while rolling, it loses its cargo, so players have to plan their movements carefully to make sure the light arrives at its destination.
Gameplay wise, the game sports an amazingly simple yet entertaining core mechanic that can engage a player for hours on end. It is, however, not without its flaws. There are some puzzles that require too much planning ahead, resulting in me playing by elimination instead of using the intended brainwork, reducing it to a memory game of "what-have-I-tried-and-failed".
The graphics are remarkably good. The level surfaces are mildly reflective materials akin to tarnished metal, augmenting the soft glow of colored light radiating from the cube by reflecting it. The background consists of a slowly migrating ring of asteroids on top of a space skybox that really sets the mood of the game.
Sound effects are forgettable, but it does have a great techno soundtrack that meshes well with the overall theme of space. Like most puzzle games, there is also no apparent storyline, but this is definitely not viewed as a failing of the game.
For the great price of $0, you can get this amazing puzzle game that offers you about 1-2 hours of brainwrecking fun. I strongly encourage anyone reading this to give this game a shot. Download from this website.
