Drone Review

Rating:

Drone is an interesting blend of shooter, tower defense and real-time strategy, all packed into an elegant little package. It allows you to shoot enemies, build things to shoot enemies and upgrade to shoot enemies better, what's not to love?

Full Review

Drone is best described as a cross between tower defence and a top-down shooter. The game puts you in the role of (presumably) a drone, and allows you to purchase weapons to equip yourself with using cash that can be looted from the bodies of dead enemies. You can also buy structures that produce friendly AI units or simply act as sentry guns that can assist you in a firefight. Enemies come in increasingly difficult waves ala traditional tower defense and a level ends when you defeat the final wave of the level.

Gameplay-wise, this game boasts a difficult formula, and manages to pull it off decently. Both styles of play (tower defense or top-down shooter) are equally capable of dealing with the situations presented in this game, which shows great attention placed on the balance by the author. However, this title is not without its flaws. The movement speed of the drone is tortuously slow for the frantic pace of an action game, which in my opinion, causes needless frustration. The game also lacks variety in gameplay after a few levels, and tends to become quite monotonous and predictable towards the mid-game.

Graphics-wise, its simplicity wins my vote. There are some subtle changes in the color scheme which keeps the game visually fresh even after several levels. The user interface also feels slick and coherent with the graphical minimalism the rest of the game adheres to.

Despite some of the flaws mentioned, Drone remains a great concept and an remarkably polished freeware game to try out. Download the game from this website.
