Redivider Review

Rating:

A simple browser-embedded game that challenges your mouse drawing skills. Cut green spheres, divide blue spheres and avoid grey spheres using mouse click-and-drag, all in 10 seconds per level. This is one puzzle game that keeps you at the edge of your seat.

Redivider is a simple game created by Jonathan Coulton using the Processing language that makes you think fast and act faster. With only 10 seconds per level, the player is required to draw lines using the mouse to cut all green spheres, divide all blue spheres (draw lines between them), and avoid all grey spheres. Its a easy to learn mechanic that allows you to get into the game fast without getting put off by the added complexity of the time pressure.

Graphics wise, this game isn't Final Fantasy, but the graphics work well enough. The visuals resemble CRT displays from early science fiction films, and has a certain degree of queer aesthetic appeal to it. This all augments the gameplay by reducing the fluff surrounding the mechanics and allowing me to clearly discern the blue, green and grey spheres easily (if they were fancy glowing orb things, identifying the color might take up the bulk of the 10 seconds).

My main complain is with the audio. The sound effects sound like they are tearing up my speakers. I understand the whole retro feel to the game, but the crackling and static is just unbearable, I literally cringe every time I interact with the game. I recommend turning down the volume of your speakers when you play this game, or switching it off altogether.

All in all, this game is still a great experience. It takes about 5-10 minute to wade through its 30 levels, and I really recommend everyone to take a look. The game is browser-playable at this website.
